As far as I am aware, you can get 3 "noble" companions from each "religion", so 3 from a catholic held location, 3 from an orthodox location, 3 from muslim (?) and 3 from pagan (?) sorry can't remember them all offhand. Interestingly, I had hired 5 mercenary companions from towns, but a lord from the same faction as me children are not implemented fully yet. when they grow of age and become characters, they have 0 stats, 0 ability to learn anything new, and 5-20 in every skill. so in terms of actually using them for anything, they are terrible i have read that wanderers get generated as you play but i cannot confirm this myself one way or another They upgrade troops and replace lost troops.
